As a convenience, we've rated our links utilizing the international
standard - the piglet scale. Some great causes have mediocre sites, and
some sites are better than their subjects. Needless to say, we weigh these
considerations extremely carefully before assigning a piglet.
 |
1 PIGLET: Not so much a link as a patty. A big log of Jimmy Dean Pork Sausage. |
 |
2 PIGLETS: Smoky-linkesque |
 |
3 PIGLETS: A robust link - slightly crunchy, sweetly spiced. Tantalizing. |
- SMG Records
-
Shawn Mullins has his own record label, SMG Records, and before he got
signed to Columbia, he put out all his own records. Now his label signs the
occasional artist, most recently Josh Joplin Band, whose latest record
"Useful Music" is really wonderful. If you're a Shawn Mullins fan there are
lots of links to other related sites, and watch for more SMG records coming
soon. Thanks to Chad and Shawn and Kelly for their resources and support and
generally for sticking up for the little guy.
- Daemon Records
-
Daemon Records is a not-for-profit indie record label founded by Indigo
Girl Amy Ray (poor Amy... it's like "Motorist Rodney King"). Celebrating
its 10th anniversary this year, Daemon is a bright light in the
otherwise dismal music business. They have been a great resource for us
and they do good work for the right reasons, which (let me wipe away
this tear) REALLY ROCKS. Check out Daemon's great roster of bands,
downloadable radio show, commentary, etc. Our hats, if not the rest of
our outfits, go off to the women of Daemon.
- Flat Earth Records
- We are now Flat Earth Recording Artists, so we can only say
good things about the label. We used to say good things because we
meant it, but now that's irrelevant. We're obligated. If you work
for Flat Earth and you're reading this, remember that we love you.
We honestly love you.
- Mysteries of Life
- We love the Mysteries of Life. They rock really hard in an unorthadox way -
lots of rhythm, beautiful melodies and smart songwriting. Of course, the
Gentle Readers endorsement means you are doomed to never ever sell any
records. Sorry.
- United States Three
-
This band makes really nice, crafted little records which are just really
cool. They're also on Flat Earth Records.
- Vulgar Boatman
- Susan used to be in this band. When the planets are properly aligned, the
Vulgar Boatmen are the best band to ever play rock and roll music.
- Legendary Stardust Cowboy
-
If you don't know the story of the Ledge, a friend of ours made a
documentary about him, but can't release it because footage from "Laugh-In"
is critical to the movie and THEY won't let him use it. The next best
thing, though, is this web site.
- Creative Loafing
- Creative Loafing: Atlanta's Entertainment Weekly
- Flagpole Magazine
- It's what's happening in Athens
- 555-1212 Area Code Lookup
- How did we live without this?
- Miss Diana's House of Chicken
- Record reviews and news by Diana Mercer, who once wrote this
in an e-mail message to Lee: An attorney friend today said, "do
you smoke" and I said "not anymore" and she said "Well I do and I
really really like it!" She also told me her catholic mother asked
her what she gave up for Lent and she said "Ma, I gave up suffering
for Lent!" Needless to say, her mother wasn't very happy.
- United
Stats Post Office Zip Code finder
- Duh.
- Corner Compact Disc
- Atlanta is blessed with several fine independent record stores,
of which Corner Compact Disc is by far the cleanest. The people
who work there are really nice too. It's highly unlikely they'll
make you feel guilty about buying Sarah McLaughlin instead of the
Grifters (we can discuss the implications of this later). They've
done nice things for us for no good reason, and so we hold them in
high esteem.
