We had a really good batch of songs for this record, and no band. Susan and I enlisted the help of Vess Ruhtenberg (The Pieces, Zero Boys, United States Three) to play bass, and two drummers--Bill Ragsdale and Travis McNabb (Better than Ezra) to play drums. We drove to Echo Park Studios in Bloomington, Indiana and spent a couple of amazingly productive days arranging with our good friend and my former band mate Paul Mahern before recording. We put the drums in a big room with some elaborate mike pattern and Vess played through a vintage tube pre-amp. Susan and I used the new Mesa Boogie amps the company had just given the studio’s owner – Mike Wanchic of John Mellencamp’s band. It also started our love affair with Jerry Jones guitars--and the album just sounds fantastic, still. This one was recorded on 2” 16-track tape and mixed without ProTools.
